The first time I realised I was truly allergic to cats, I was eight years old, standing in the living room of my mum’s friend’s Queenslander. I’d petted her cat for all of three seconds before my eye ballooned shut.
That was my origin story.
Red, puffy, dramatic — like a tiny soap-opera star with hay fever.
When my parents divorced, my step-mum got a cat. Suddenly I couldn’t spend much time there without itching, sneezing, or quietly dying inside. As I grew up, the pattern continued. Every time I met a charming man and found out he was a Cat Dad… well, I swiped left. My immune system simply wouldn’t let me have nice things.
Fast-forward to 36, when I walked into a bar and experienced something dangerously close to love at first sight.
And of course — of course — he was a Cat Daddy. And just above, that’s his gorgeous street-turned-live-in cat, Pood.
At the exact same time, I became close friends with Elethëa, who owns a sphynx. Suddenly the universe was full of cats and cat people, and I was tired of being the sneezy outsider. So I did what any rational person in the throes of love and loneliness would do: I decided to fight my fate.
I started spending more time with all of them — the humans and the cats — determined to navigate an almost-life-threatening allergy for the sake of connection, community, and the simple joy of belonging.
Meanwhile, one of my friends (a science nerd) kept telling me about “the eggshell anecdote.” Fel d1 reduction. Allergen-binding compounds. The whole thing. So we bought the product to try it.
And honestly?
It wasn’t accessible.
